Name of Assignment: Floorplan Project Subject: Geometry Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Marsh
Description of Work/Assignment:
For this assignment, we have to design an apartment complex using transformations (translation, reflection, rotation, and dilation). Our starting apartment (which served as our template) had to be between 600 and 800 square feet and needed to contain 5 predetermined rooms and one diagonal wall.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I feel like this project addresses financial, economic, and business literacy. Part of the project was setting a rent price for the apartments after considering the rent in some places that we might've wanted our apartment complex.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
Well, apparently I'm the only person in my group who actually knows how to use a ruler to draw a straight line, so I've got that going for me. But the entire floorplan looks pretty neat and tidy, and I've spent most of our class time drawing it while my other groupmates worked on other things for the project.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I've never actually had to consider rent for a project before, so doing that really helped me understand how expensive some places are. It's also helped me consider where I want to go for college/adulthood where the rent isn't crazy.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
My back, neck, and hand hurt like crazy after drawing out the floorplan because of how much I have to bend over and contort myself to get the lines right. I also keep forgetting the doorways when I'm drawing them, which is really irritating considering we're drawing in a line-art pen.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
I would stop forgetting the doorways for starters. I would also change the layout a bit because I just have this one really weirdly proportioned closet that we have no clue what to do with.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
I definitely did a project like this in 6th grade, only with a house and there was no price incorporated. It also relates to another project I did in 6th grade with budgeting a lifestyle based on a job we picked. I just remember Ms. Provance giving us this huge packet to complete and the project ended up taking us like, three weeks. How can you apply this to future learning?
I feel like this assignment will be useful if I end up taking consumer math.
