Name of Assignment: Chemical and Physical Changes Comic Strip Project Subject: Chemistry Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. S
Description of Work/Assignment:
In this assignment, we had to create a comic strip about chemical and physical changes. We had to define both and give 2 examples.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This assignment addressed my “thinking and problem-solving” skills, as well as my “self-directional” skills. I was a little worried about what I was going to draw (as we weren’t allowed to use stick figures) and how long it would take me, but I figured it out. I really enacted my ability to stay on task with this assignment, especially during our in-class work time. I finished over half of the sketching in the 40-minute period and stayed focused and working 98% of that time, so I was really productive.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I think that all of the illustrations are really cute. I’m really happy with how they turned out and I like how I colored it too. It was meant to be pretty simplistic and mostly black-and-white, but I think the touch of color makes it look cool.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
Working in class on this project was probably the most focused I’ve ever been during a class work period. I stayed on task the entire time, despite the fact that everyone around me was talking a lot. I felt really accomplished and productive at the end of the period and now I know how much I’m capable of accomplishing in 40 minutes if I really focus.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
Not stressing about the art. I tend to nit-pick all of my art and drawing is definitely not my strongest area of artistic ability, so once I got past critiquing myself an unnecessary amount, the project was pretty fun.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
I would try to get even more done both in class and the first night I brought it home. I ended up getting sick the night before it was due and I couldn’t finish it, so I turned it in a few days late because I needed more time to work on it.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
This project reminds me of a mini project I did in 8th grade when I had to make a comic strip about DNA and RNA.
How can you apply this to future learning?
I have more drawing experience under my belt now, so the next time I’m told to draw something for an assignment (and it can’t be stick figures), my blobs will be cute and no one can say I didn’t do what was asked of me.
