Name of Assignment: Build A Life Subject: Junior Seminar Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Cassie
In this assignment, we started learning how to do mock versions of things we'll have to do in real life as either an adult or an older teen to successfully participate in society and the economy. The first assignments we've done have been centered around jobs, specifically job applications and interviews.
I feel that this project covers my financial, economic, and business literacy skill, as well as civic literacy and engagement. I used financial, economy, and business literacy because this entire assignment series is centered around economics and working so that we can be better prepared for adulthood. I used civic literacy and engagement because we had to look up jobs we could apply for today in our community (or go off of our current job) to fill out a mock application and run a mock interview with a partner, demonstrating our understanding of the business, job position, and what they offer to the community.
Jaci (who was my partner) and I were actually voted best interview by our class and won a prize for it, which makes me feel like I did a good job at my actual interview. I also feel an odd sense of pride when filling out the mock application because my application was accepted by my current employer, which meant that was also done well.
I personally don't feel like the assignment helped improve my 21st Century Skills, rather the application and interview I based the assignments off of helped. Either way, I know now how to fill out a job application, list references, and be part of a professional interview.
Recalling what I had actually put on my real work application was pretty hard, so I was stressing out about making sure my information was all correct.
I don't think there's anything I would really change about this assignment. I would have liked to have been less nervous during the mock interview, but apparently I did better than I felt like I did!
I did something like this in 6th grade in Ms. Provance's math class. We had a big packet that we had to fill out and it contained different parts of adulthood like getting a "job", finding a "house", and making sure we made enough money to pay rent every month, on top of other bills.
I don't know if I'll ever use this academically again, but I know how to apply for a job and complete a profession interview now, which will be very useful for the rest of my life.
