What was the project? For the final ELA essay, we had to pick at least two of the given topics relating to The Hate U Give, and then write an 8 paragraph essay about it. I chose to summarize the story and relate it to the real world.
Why this project? I chose this work sample because I worked really hard on it and I’m pretty proud of the outcome. I’m proud of how I was able to make strong connections to the real world.
21st Century Skills Used: In this project, I used informational skills by finding relevant and factual information that helped me prove my point and supported what I was saying. I used communication skills by writing a paper that was readable and made sense to the audience. I used self-directional skills by staying on task and writing the essay. I used global awareness by relating situations in the book to the real world using examples that have happened fairly recently.
Growth Demonstrated: I realized after starting to write the essay that I was going to struggle because I’m pretty bad at summarizing. I usually have two ways to summarize: so much detail that I’m almost completely retelling the event, or I say three things about it and leave out a large portion of detail. I had to rewrite the essay twice, but I’m happy with how it looked in the end.
Areas of Possible Growth: Next time I’d definitely like to start on it earlier so I don’t stress as much about it like I did while working on it. I’d also like to work on getting better at summarizing in general so I don’t have to start over so many times for going into too much detail.
